  Dear Ambassador Vershbow, I am very grateful to you and to Washington for your hearty consideration and understanding of Korean situation. The current candlelight vigils on the streets of Seoul are no other than rallies that have been agitated by a group of political activists (whom we call the Leftists). Now, the connotation of 'the Leftism' in Korea is quite different from that is in America. In America, leftism is not necessary anti-American, and even not necessary political as mostly it is a choice for an option for economical policy. In Korea, leftism is still rooted in the Marxist ideologies. You might wonder why Koreans have many words for the leftists: ÁÂÆÄ, ÁÂÀÍ, Á»¡.

  For English word "rice" we have "½Ò"(uncooked rice) and "¹ä"(boiled rice). And the distinction between "½Ò" and "¹ä" is very clear for any Korean. In the similar logic, the distinction between ÁÂÆÄ and ÁÂÀÍ is very clear to me while it is still the same word when translated into English. If a Korean leftist is not affiliated with pro-North Korean groups, he or she is what we call ÁÂÆÄ. But because the majority of Korean leftists are pro-North Korean and anti-American, we often call them Ä£ºÏÁÂÆÄ. Of course, Ä£ºÏÁÂÆÄ is the synonym for ÁÂÀÍ. And because ÁÂÀÍ is »¡°»ÀÌ in folk language, recently many Korean netizens prefer to call them Á»¡.

   I have observed that the Leftist Ideology (ÁÂÀÍ»ç»ó) in Korea is an indication that Korea is still not an Western society. Modern Korea is a postmodern culture, yet not an Western society. On this occasion, my criteria for distinction between Western and non-Western culture is the way one perceives reality. The contemporary Korean crisis is largely due to the fact that the reality many Koreans perceive is quite different from actual reality. This explains your recent remark when a group of Koreans don't trust science. We all know that Korea is not Africa of the eighteenth century. Korea is now a member of OECD.

   Yet, the crowed with candlelight vigils on the streets of Seoul are those who are agitated by manipulated or false information. They are agitated by manipulated information that exaggerate the case of mad cow disease in America. They are deaf to what science speaks. This is a madness in Korea in the early twenty-first century. And the thing is that those who have lost the ability to think objectively are attempting to gain political hegemony and control Korean society. This is the picture of the current candlelight vigils on the streets of Seoul. And this new Barbarianism is what ±è´ëÁß calls "Direct Democracy"(Á÷Á¢ ¹ÎÁÖÁÖÀÇ). You might remember Kim even mentioned it two weeks ago at the eight anniversary meeting of the 6.15 Common Declaration. But we must say that this Barbarianism is NOT Á÷Á¢ ¹ÎÁÖÁÖÀÇ, but only a major hindrance to true Democracy.
